Awareness of the Breath

A short, guided pause

This is a simple, 5-minute guided audio designed to help you pause, settle, and reconnect with your breathing.

Breathing happens all day, every day, without us needing to think about it. And yet, it’s one of the most direct ways of noticing how the body and mind are actually doing. When we’re under pressure, breathing often becomes shallow or tense. When things begin to settle, the breath usually softens too.

This practice offers a gentle opportunity to notice that process for yourself.

Time and practical notes

  • The recording is approximately 5 minutes long

  • Allow around 7 minutes in total, including settling before and after

  • You can listen with or without headphones

  • You can use this practice at any time of day

What you might notice over time

People often report:

  • A greater sense of calm

  • Reduced physical tension

  • Clearer, steadier attention

There’s no need to look for these. Simply meet whatever is present.

How to approach the practice

Set aside a few minutes where you’re unlikely to be disturbed. Sit comfortably, ideally upright but relaxed. You can have your eyes open or closed.

Before starting the audio, allow yourself a moment to arrive. Then, as you listen, let your attention rest on the natural rhythm of your breathing. Inhaling and exhaling. The movement of the body as the breath comes and goes.

It’s completely normal for the mind to wander. When you notice that happening, gently bring your attention back to the breath, without judgement. That returning is part of the practice.

You might notice sensations, rhythms, or changes in the quality of your breathing. Or you might not. Either is fine.

What this practice isn’t

  • It’s not a breathing technique you need to ‘do correctly’
  • It’s not about forcing relaxation or emptying your mind
  • It’s not something you need to concentrate hard on or get right

There’s nothing to achieve here. Simply noticing is enough.

What this practice is

  • A short, guided moment of pausing and awareness

  • An invitation to notice the breath as it already is

  • A way of gently calming the nervous system

Suitable whether you’re completely new to mindfulness or more familiar with it.
