Critical Curiosity

Exploring beliefs, conversations, and how we make sense of things

What is it?

Critical Curiosity is a space to explore how we think, what we believe, and how those beliefs shape the way we see the world and relate to each other. It brings together reflective practice and structured conversation, creating an environment where ideas can be examined without pressure to defend, convince, or win.

It is a facilitated group experience focused on exploring beliefs and perspectives with openness and support.

It draws on approaches such as Spectrum Street Epistemology, reflective inquiry, and mindful awareness. The aim is not to change people’s minds, but to understand more clearly how beliefs are formed, held, and expressed.

Rather than debate or discussion in the usual sense, the focus is on:

  • slowing conversations down
  • asking thoughtful questions
  • noticing assumptions and reasoning
  • maintaining curiosity, especially when things feel uncertain or emotionally charged

A typical session may include:

  • A brief framing or introduction to a theme, approach or practice
  • A live facilitated 'conversation' between several or all participants
  • Opportunities to reflect on what was noticed, both in the conversation and in ourselves
  • Optional participation, either as a conversation partner or observer
  • There is no requirement to speak or take part in a particular way. Observing is a valid and often valuable way of engaging.

What it's not

It is not about:

  • debating or proving a point
  • informing or persuading
  • reaching agreement

Instead, it focuses on:

  • listening to understand, both ourselves and others
  • recognising the limits of our own certainty
  • staying engaged without becoming reactive
  • creating space for more thoughtful, grounded conversations

Where is it?

There are regular sessions taking place in central Lincoln, usually every second Tuesday evening from 7-9pm. These are £8 to attend. Tea/coffee are provided (sometimes biscuits!).

Critical Curiosity is inspired and informed by ‘Spectrum Street Epistemology’ (SSE). This is a thought-provoking and engaging practice that offers a unique way to explore ideas, beliefs, and values in a collaborative, non-confrontational environment.
